SPECIES INFO:
"The Jollyville Plateau Salamander is one of many species of spring-dwelling salamanders in Central Texas in
the
genus Eurycea. These salamanders descended from a single broad-ranging
common ancestor that inhabited a connected system of underground
aquifers, springs, and streams in the area. As a result of historical
climate changes, these waterways dried up and became more disconnected
over time, and populations of salamanders became isolated from one
another. Over time, these now separate salamander populations
accumulated physical and genetic differences, eventually becoming
different species. Specifically, the Jollyville Plateau Salamander is
found only in springs located in northeast Travis County and southwest
Williamson County. It is characterized by small brown markings all over
its body, akin to unique fingerprints, with each individual displaying a
distinct pattern."

RANGE:
"The ideal habitats for the Jollyville Plateau Salamander are springs, spring-fed streams, and caves with flowing water. Most of the known populations are surface dwelling, or epigean, although this can be somewhat of a misleading classification because the salamanders will retreat to underground refugia during dry periods when the springs no longer flow at the surface."
