COLOR PALETTE SAMPLED FROM IMAGES OF THE REDDISH EGRET
SPECIES INFO:
"Reddish Egrets are always fun to watch as they actively pursue their prey in shallow water along the coast. They run and chase fish, rather than standing still and waiting like other herons. Many refer to this as a foraging “dance.” The name is a bit deceiving because they aren’t always reddish. There are actually two color morphs, the reddish morph and an all white morph. It is always a treat to see Reddish Egrets because they are somewhat rare, with an estimated breeding population size of no more than 5,000 pairs. Reddish Egrets rely on coastal habitats throughout their life cycle and protecting those habitats is critical for the conservation of this species."

"Reddish Egrets are one of the most active species of heron when they are hunting for fish. They run and chase their prey, rather than standing still and waiting like many other species. It is always fun to see this foraging ‘dance’. Even when they aren’t particularly active, it is always a treat to see Reddish Egrets because they are relatively rare, with an estimated breeding population size of no more than 5,000 pairs. Reddish Egrets rely on coastal habitats throughout their life cycle and protecting those habitats is critical for conservation of this species."

- Adult Reddish Egrets have two color morphs, a rare all-white morph and a darker bluish and reddish morph. When pairing up, males and females don't seem to pay attention to which morph their mate is. A single nest can have chicks of both color morphs in it.
- Dark-morph Reddish Egrets can sometimes have extensive white in feathers that would normally be gray. It's not known whether these are “intermediate” morphs (between light and dark), partially leucistic individuals, or perhaps even hybrids with other heron species in some cases.

RANGE:
"Resident (not migratory) to short-distance migrant. Makes extensive dispersal movements after nesting. Some nesters withdraw southward in winter, including to northern Central America and Hispaniola."
